The traditional village of Gavalochori is nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains, in the district of Apokoronas. The environment of this area of outstanding natural beauty is now protected by the programme “Natura 2000”.
It has uninterrupted views of Souda Bay and the Southern coast of the Akrotiri Peninsula. The spectacular local environment is renowned for its many trees including pine, oak, cypress, wild almond, pear, and a feast of wild herbs and other aromatic plants.
The wild beauty of the area is greatly enhanced by the rugged incline of the land to the sea.
The area features a number of small traditional hamlets; some of which may allow some further minor development.
Gavalochori itself retains various fine examples of the traditional rural architecture such as the 18th century olive press, the church of the Panagia and that of Agios Sergios, the old school and the complex of the wells from the period of Venetian occupation.
The Folklore Museum and the archeological site of the Roman cemetery provide further witness to the long and fascinating history of the area.
In this area is constructing 10 detached dwellings utilising local stone with traditional building techniques to blend harmoniously with the local environs. The houses are designed with the utmost care, to provide all modern comforts within a tasteful traditional style. This will ensure, for residents, a full appreciation of the nature and lifestyle of Crete.
The area is especially suited to those with an artistic eye, and lovers of nature, with its spectacular walking routes and beautiful beaches. There are some especially memorable beaches within a very short distance. For instance, those of Ombrosgialos (3 km), Almirida (3 km), Plaka (3 km) and Kalives (7-8 km).
The international airport of Chania is just 35 km; while the Medical Centre of Vamos is only 2 km, and the port of Souda 18 km away.
