Around 27 km south of Rethymno, lies the peaceful rural village of Mariou. This is an ideal setting for nature lovers and keen walkers, wishing to explore the unspoilt countryside.

For those who wish to make their own way by car you need to follow the road leaving Rethymno for Spili going inland and to the south. If you are on the main Heraklion - Chania road you will see a large green sign indicating Spili.

After about 17 kilometres there is a sign to the right for Plakias and Preveli, take this turning. After 500 meters you will pass through the village of Koxare and 4 kilometres later the road follows the Kourtaliotis Gorge. At the end of this Gorge is the village Asomatos and on leaving Asomatos there is a turning to the left for Plakias. (ignore this) and go straight on until you reach the village of Mariou .
